What is Lomics? And why people would care…

As I told in my previous post, my new daily work and passion is a mobile startup Lomics, which we’ve founded  with a local angel investor some time ago. So what is Lomics?

Lomics is the first and only IPhone app that “magically” turns your live video stream to cool looking comics stories “on-the-fly”. Just hold a Snapchat-style record button and the app will do the rest for you automatically: select key storytelling frames, recognize speech, apply comic bubbles and other decorative elements (check the screenshots below):

You also may be more creative and further beautify your story by selecting one of our 13 unique looking styles, adding extra speech bubbles, comics effects or stickers:

The app is available on the App Store and at: www.lomics.co

Lomics concept was born when I realized that traditional media formats we use for online sharing are not actually working well enough when it comes to stories. Lets go through some of the available options:

  1. Regular text/Blog(like this WordPress): boring for most people, most simply don’t like to read. Also sometimes is better to just show something than describe it using hundreds of words
  1. Video/Vlog: It will take hours of your time for recording multiple “takes” and then editing it to get an ok looking result. Definitely requires some acting and editing skills from you. And even if you have time and skills how many of your friends would really spend 20 mins of their free time watching it, best case scenario they’ll open and watch a few frames from it.
  1. Photos and Collages: I personally hate taking pictures the most! It spoils all the fun of your party or travel. The one who taking pictures never having fun, he’s taking hundreds of pictures to sort them out later at home and keep just few which good.

So my mission was to create the best-in-class mobile application and technology for capturing and sharing your daily life stories with friends. Think about it, Digital Photo and Video are just descendants of old analog cameras and were never actually created for storytelling, thus have lots of disadvantages.

I gained a lot of experience and knowledge relative to latest most advanced camera and video processing algorithms during the time I worked for Qualcomm and many of those became pieces for this “new modern way of storytelling” puzzle. Many things we use in Lomics were not possible even a couple of years ago, simply CPUs and GPUs were not that good, speech recognition that accurate.

Now everything is there for us: speech recognition will be able to work properly in very noisy environments, thanks to Deep Learning technologies; mobile GPUs are becoming really powerful and capable of processing complex Computer Vision algorithms.

What is Lomics? And why people would care…

My first day out of work…

Just a last week I worked as product manager in Qualcomm Inc, located in sunny and beautiful San Diego, CA. For the ones who don’t know, Qualcomm is often considered to be “one of the top 10” places to work in US: the work is stable, the salary is good, the location is beautiful, blah blah… but, as mentioned in the title, starting from today everything for me is changed.

Why?

No, I didn’t quit because I’m tired, overwhelmed or I think that I’m deserving a better salary. The reason is that I want to spend 100% of time now working on my own project: mobile technology and application named Lomics (web-site: http://www.lomics.co). I truly believe that the app is super fun and our technology can improve the way we share daily life stories with our friends.

Now in my to do list I have quite a few things to do: sell my furniture, pack my luggage, move to SF Bay Area and find strategic partnerships while surviving SF pricing with no regular job behind. So I decided, that this venture could become a great material for my first blog!

Oops, I forgot to tell you about myself…

My name is Arthur, I’m 29 years old. I was born in a tiny town located in the middle of nowhere  European part of Russia. Then moved to AK-47 motherland, city named Izhevsk, where I got my engineering bachelors and masters degree at Kalashnikov Technical University. Later I meditated in Iowa, tried to become a pro Muay Thai boxer(won a few amateur fights), almost died from dehydration climbing San Diego mountains, became one of the few responsible for 3D and 2D graphics in ~70% of modern Android phones and finally now is a time for the new and my biggest life adventure!
